Our multimedia project, “UnTold Stories of Welsh Global Heritage”, aims to showcase the diversity of Welsh heritage to communities that rarely engage with such narratives. Using both innovative and traditional media, we provide immersive experiences that connect participants with the cultural diversity of Wales, often for the first time.

The project features cutting-edge technology, including 3D modeling, virtual reality (VR), and 360° video, alongside traditional crafting methods. This combination allows participants to actively engage with the content, fostering a deeper connection and involvement in the project’s outcomes.

Over the last month, we’ve conducted workshops in specialist additional learning needs (ALN) environments in Cardiff and Caerphilly, and with young learners in remote areas including the Rhondda Valley, Afan Valley, and Merthyr.

The introduction of immersive technology has generated excitement, as many young learners are experiencing 3D modeling, VR, and 360° cameras for the first time.

Taking Welsh Global Heritage XR to marginalised and remote communities in Wales

It’s been particularly inspiring to see the impact of curated 360° videos, which transport participants to events and celebrations within Wales’ diverse communities—exposing them to cultures mostly alien to them. Over 90% of the children had never experinced the culture we introduced them too before the workshops. We hope this has broadened their understanding and appreciation of local diversity.

Through these technologies, we are bridging the gap between digital innovation and cultural storytelling, empowering marginalized communities to explore and engage with their heritage in meaningful ways.
