We recently visited the Young Carers Service on the Gurnos Estate, Merthyr. The careers are managed by Barnardoes.
We wanted to give the young people the opportunity to try the virtual reality experiences that we’ve created. As we have learned, most of the teenagers were used to virtual reality headsets, indeed several owned the Oculus Quest2, that we generally use.
It seems to be, more often than not, it is the supervisors that are experiencing (and enjoying) virtual reality for the first time.
The young people all experienced the Virtual Welsh Fossil Room and the Virtual Drift Mine, Pwll Bach Cwm Rhondda that we have created. Several also had a look at the “Safety in the Coal Mine” also. The boys especially seemed to enjoy “Safety in the Coal Mine” as they are able to throw all the safety items into a large heap in the lamp room! Not surprising when they are familar with Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty video games!
We had a good chat with the young people. They are familiar with the hardware and a multitude of games, but (unsurprisingly) unfamilar with the architecture that lies behind the virtual reality. Several of them said that they’d be very interested in suite of creative workshops that explained more about some of the basics behind gaming. Watch this space!

Yn ddiweddar, fe aethom ar ymweliad â Gwasanaeth Gofalwyr Ifanc ar Ystâd Gurnos, Merthyr. Mae’r gofalwyr ifanc yn cael eu rheoli gan Barnardo’s. Roeddem am roi’r cyfle i’r bobl ifanc roi cynnig ar y profiadau realiti rhithwir rydym wedi’u creu. Fel yr ydym wedi dysgu, roedd y rhan fwyaf o’r arddegau yn arfer defnyddio setiau testun realiti rhithwir, yn wir, roedd gan sawl un y Quest2 Oculus, a ddefnyddiwn fel rheol.
Ymddengys ei fod yn fwy aml na pheidio i’r goruchwylwyr brofi realiti rhithwir am y tro cyntaf (ac yn mwynhau hynny).
Profodd yr holl bobl ifanc y Virtual Welsh Fossil Room a’r Drift Mine Rhithwir, Pwll Bach Cwm Rhondda a gweithredwyd gennym. Roedd sawl un hefyd yn edrych ar “Diogelwch yn y Mwynglodd” hefyd. Roedd y bechgyn yn arbennig yn ymddangos o fwynhau “Diogelwch yn y Mwynglodd” gan eu bod yn gallu taflu’r holl eitemau diogelwch i stac fawr yn yr ystafell loetran! Nid yw’n syndod wrth iddynt fod yn gyfarwydd â gemau fideo Grand Theft Auto a Call of Duty!
Cafwyd sgwrs dda gyda’r bobl ifanc. Maent yn gyfarwydd â’r caledwedd a llu o gemau, ond (fel y gellid ei ragweld) nid ydynt yn gyfarwydd â’r pensaernïaeth sydd wrth wraidd y realiti rhithwir. Dywedodd sawl un ohonynt y byddent yn awyddus iawn i gymryd rhan mewn cyfres o weithdai creadigol sy’n esbonio mwy am rai o’r elfennau sylfaenol y tu ôl i gemau. Gwyliwch y gofod hwn!
