A FORMER miner who was one of the first on the scene at the Six Bells mining disaster in 1960 has been remembered for his generosity and his willingness to help others.
Owen Tucker died on August 14, aged 84.
Born on February 10, 1935, he lived in the house he was born in at Six Bells, Abertillery, all his life.
He worked in the Six Bells Col-liery from the age of 17. When he was 25, he found himself at the scene of one of the UK’s worst post-war mining disasters.
On June 28, 1960, an explosion ripped through the tunnels of · Arael Griffin Colliery in Six Bells. The disaster claimed 45 lives.
