We are now approximately six months into the “Untold Stories of Welsh Global Heritage” project, an ambitious two-year initiative that delves into the complexities of immigration to Wales, our global heritage, and Wales’ role as a Nation of Sanctuary.
Throughout this journey, we have been engaging with individuals and communities across Wales to deepen our understanding of the cultural heritage of our fellow citizens. By fostering meaningful conversations, we are helping to break down barriers and build connections.
We have spoken to descendants of Italians who migrated to Wales in the 1920s, Yemenis whose family members died supporting the D-Day landings, and Iraqi Kurds who settled here in the 1970s after enduring the horrors of gas attacks on their communities. We have also connected with Nepalese Gurkhas who made Wales their home, Sikhs who emigrated from Punjab, and Hindus who came from Gujarat, India, by way of Kenya.
As part of our effort, we are recording oral histories, capturing environmental and video portraits, collecting archival images, and creating 3D scans of significant objects. In addition, we have been attending ceremonies and cultural events to document these rich stories.
This autumn, the digital assets we have gathered will serve as the foundation for workshops with young people, who will create collages inspired by these remarkable narratives.
Ultimately, the stories, portraits, videos, 3D models, and collages will be part of a multimedia exhibition, that will include, Virtual Reality, that will tour Wales, beginning at the Senedd Cymru from May to July 2025.
