An important part of the over-all project is to ensure that as wide a range of people as possible are engaged with their community’s heritage. To enable and heighten engagement we have introduced young learners to some of the technology that is used within online gaming – 3D modelling.

We introduced the concept of photogrammetry, the conversion of 2D images to 3D models (via point date clouds, that the photogrammetry software generates). It is the same technology that we use to create the 3D

Young learners in primary schools in the Rhondda and at ACE Cardiff have created 3D portraits themselves using iPhones of a class mate. ACE Cardiff also had the opportunity to create 3D “digital twins” of some mining objects provided by Rhondda Heritage Park.
