School Visit to Last Voices of the Rhondda

We had a lovely day in Rhondda Heritage Park with the the children from Hafod Primary School that took part in the Last Voices of the Rhondda project.

The children, as usual, were a delight to host. And the staff from Rhondda Heritage Park, the miner guides and Outreach Officer Kathrine Lewis, showed them around the mining experience. As well as visting the underground mine, the children learnt what it was like to wash clothes, before washing machines. They used old washing boards, carbonic soap and a mangle to squeeze the water out.

The children also had the chance to see the “Last Voices of the Rhondda” exhibition in which they participated. As well as learning about 3D technology, that was used in the project, they could see the fabulous portraits of ex-miner and part-time mining guide Ron Eveliegh that they made.

The children, also had the opportunity, for the first time to listen to the soundscape that featured the recordings of 15 miners and miners wives from the Rhondda Valley.
