Today marks an exciting milestone as we witness the first tangible steps of the Nature’s Wonderland Virtual Reality R&D project coming to life inside a VR headset. Although six months into the project we’re at an early stage with the XR, as the first level begins to be blocked out, the essence of the project is already beginning to emerge. We can now start to see, hear, and feel the immersive experience as it takes shape in extended reality.
This project is a testament to collaboration and community participation. Japanese artist Mari Wirth’s intricate paper cuts, the papier-mâché creations by young adults from Grangetown and Butetown (ACE Cardiff), and the 3D scanning and production expertise from the Vision Fountain team (Richard, Chieko and Will) are all coming together. Adding to this tapestry, the ambient music composed by Phil Reeve enhances the sensory experience.
One of the most exciting aspects of the project has been the 3D scanning of fantastical animals, crafted by young learners from Grangetown & Butetown at ACE Cardiff. Mari Wirth’s nature-inspired paper-cut art is also being woven into the VR environment, adding layers of intricacy.
Through this R&D phase, we’re exploring how we can highlight the parallels between societal cohesion and the delicate balance found in nature. Both are fragile, often unstable, and require thoughtful care. While our project is primarily aimed at younger audiences, it offers valuable lessons for adults and leaders.
This journey wouldn’t be possible without the support of Arts Council Wales, especially Cerys Thomas, and the Wales Millennium Centre’s David Massey.
